THE SMOLNY CONVENT
The plans for this grandiose architectual giant were never completed, as the Empress Elizabeth nearly bankrupted the imperial coffers attempting to finish this project. Built mostly in a rocco fashion, Stasov, in 1835 finished the plans (a scaled down version), in the much more sedate neoclassical style. Services (on weekends), concerts, and musical festivals are held here throughout the year.
